The British Library Sound Archive is creating a sound archive for the UK, starting with Sheffield and the surrounding area.
The library wants people to use smartphones with free audiobook software or other audio equipment to record the sounds, upload them to the archive and mark it on the map.
The recordings will be permanently online for future generations to listen to, as well as studied by experts and stored as an archive to show what the UK sounds like today.
The Sheffield map currently has recordings including a sports day at Brunswick school, Tinsley Park Road, and Sheffield station coffee kiosk.
Recordings can be up to five minutes long, and people can upload as many as they like.
Richard Ranft, head of the British Library Sound Archive, said: “We anticipate a variety of recordings from home to leisure, at all different times of the day and year.
“Some will be noisy, some will be tranquil but all will provide a unique record of sounds.”
The project will be expanded to take in Barnsley, Doncaster, Chesterfield and the Peak District National Park in the coming months.
